Originally coming from a nursing background, my journey with counselling started in 2007 when I enrolled on a person-centred course in Cornwall, that first year I learnt so much and left me wanting to follow a career in counselling a choice which would lead to further studying which would last a further 4 years.
Spending 2 years of developing my skills and knowledge I had an overwhelming urge to share my knowledge and experience with others, to let people see that a recovery from a traumatic childhood can be helped and victims can be supported in finding their own journey picking through their own childhood trauma experiences and to reach peace and acceptance by believing in themselves, maybe for the first time.
My formal teaching career started in in 2010 with initially teaching Human biology for adults, this love of Biology has continued up till today, watching students move into their chosen health professional roles has been very rewarding however my love of counselling and psychotherapy has always been central in my teaching career.
Along with the Biochemistry I also taught Psychology, Ethics, Sociology and Counselling at level 2,3 and 4, working with different providers and awarding boards, such as CPCAB, AIM and OCN, these are all high level Boards and I have gained valuable experience through working with such providers.
With all the training and teaching I have carried out, my great love is working with students, clients and people in general, the privileged position I have found myself in is a role I never take for granted. To see people work through their issues and problems is unbelievably the epitome of my career. To build trust and relational depth with clients can be a difficult goal at times but so worth seeing the outcome.
I believe in being there for the clients, listening to them, offering the skills and knowledge I have learnt along the way is the way forward, experience has taught me this has to be essential for the clients, I have worked with complex needs and groups over the years, specialising in Addictions, Trauma, Depression, low self-esteem issues and Anxiety. I use several types of modalities and believe that there is not a one fits all modality but rather assess the needs and range of issues and curtail the modality to fit the client.
I work using CBT, PCT, TA and Gestalt Therapy, I find this works best for me and the client with gaining a successful outcome.
I carryout continual CPD training thus updating my knowledge and understanding of the work I do, I also use a qualified Supervisor to enhance my work and to improve my practice, clients might be discussed with my supervisor however no names or details about clients are mentioned, always keeping anonymity.
My ethos is I will listen, I will offer a safe place and a total commitment to supporting you in your journey of recovery, if I do not think I can support you in the right way for whatever reasons, as a duty of care and commitment to you, I will refer you on to someone who can. Always your support and choices are yours, but I will always be available to listen to you no matter how tough the road ahead seems.
